The Fantastic Four’ of European Athletics were honoured in BelgradeLast Saturday, October 16 It was four athletes receiving European Athletics’ top honours who were naturally the centre of attention at the Awards Night presented by Mondo.
Croatia’s high jump queen Blanka Vlašić, as always, shone in the spotlight that was shined upon her as she strode on stage to be honoured as the European Athlete of the Year on a second occasion, following her initial award in 2007.
So far only she and fellow athletics icons Carolina Klüft and Yelena Isinbayeva have won the female award twice.
French sprint sensation Christophe Lemaitre was unable to attend the Gala; for this reason his parents, Christian and Marie-Therese, were instead on hand to receive the Award on his behalf.
The Rising Star of the Year Award stayed in French hands because Lemaitre’s friend and team-mate Teddy Tamgho was the recipient after his stunning year in which he took the world indoor title with a world indoor record of 17.90m
Croatia’s Sandra Perkovic is the winner of the female European Athletics Rising Star of the Year Award.
